The Chronicles of Narnia

Book cover redesign for The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, written by C.S. Lewis.

Popular books have several different cover illustrations, which often portray different parts of the book that are important to the story. Sometimes it’s about the characters, sometimes it’s the setting, or it could even be an object that plays a big part in the plot. I wanted to redesign the cover illustration for C.S. Lewis’ ‘The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe’, using an image that would be unique to the story, and not just a redesign of something that had already been done.

Pre-Existing Covers

After doing a bit of research about pre-existing covers for the book, I learned that the Lion is the main centerpiece of most covers for this book, so I decided to stray away from including the Lion as the main image for the redesign.

Redesign

I liked the idea of having an image on the front cover that isn’t immediately obvious, but still relates to an important part of the story. Foregoing the wardrobe ideas for the front cover, I focused on creating an image of each of the children's crowns from the end of the book as the cover image..

Thinking of important scenes from the book, I remembered the scene where each of the Pevensie children (aside from Edmund) receive gifts from Father Christmas to help aid them in the coming battle, and I thought of creating an image of each of the gifts to go on the back cover of the book.

Narnia Flat Hardcover

I decided to use the wardrobe image I had created on the Table of Contents page to help fill the page out, rather than just having a list of the chapters. I also decided to include an inside cover page for the book, featuring the black and white version of the book cover.
